For thirty years, field fortification was treated as obsolete. Doctrine was built around manoeuvre, air superiority and expeditionary operations. Digging in was what you did when the plan had already failed.
Ukraine reversed that. Static lines. Sustained artillery fire. Drones over everything. Whether a unit keeps its combat power now depends on whether its people are protected where they stand.
Reinforced concrete protects, but it costs days, it demands construction logistics that do not exist at the front, and it is written off the moment the line moves.

Frequently asked questions
What is an armoured fighting position?
An armoured fighting position is a hardened emplacement that protects soldiers while allowing them to observe and fire from cover. Traditionally it is dug and cast in place from reinforced concrete. Parabella is a prefabricated alternative: armour steel panels that are bolted together on site, in 45 minutes, and can be dismantled and moved again.
How long does it take to install Parabella?
45 minutes from arrival on site to operational, using a crane and a small crew. Dismantling takes 15 minutes, after which the position can be redeployed at another location. By comparison, a cast reinforced concrete position takes days to weeks, largely because of formwork and curing time.
How many soldiers fit inside Parabella?
Up to ten armed soldiers. The structure is 3.2 m in diameter, sits on piles above an excavated position, and provides 360° observation and fire through hinged armoured hatches.
What has Parabella been tested against?
According to manufacturer test data: small arms up to and including 14.5 mm armour-piercing incendiary ammunition, 152 mm high-explosive shells on direct hit, simultaneous detonation of two 120 mm mines, drone-delivered munitions, shaped charges including RPG-7, and fragmentation and blast overpressure. Testing and certification were carried out in Ukraine to Ukrainian standards. The results have not been validated by a European test house. Reports and footage are available on request.
Is Parabella certified to STANAG 4569?
Not at present. Parabella is certified to Ukrainian standards and codified to NATO standard, with NATO Stock Number 5411-61-017-2890. Independent testing to STANAG 4569 and EN 1522/1063 is on the roadmap. If your procurement route requires European validation before contract award, raise it at the enquiry stage.
Can Parabella be moved and reused?
Yes. It is a bolted panel structure, dismantled in 15 minutes and rebuilt at the next location. This is the main difference from cast concrete: when the line shifts, a concrete position is a lost investment, whereas Parabella travels with the unit.
What happens if Parabella is hit?
Because the structure is built from bolted panels, damage is repaired by replacing the affected panel rather than repairing or writing off the whole structure. A cast concrete position generally requires structural repair or abandonment.
How is Parabella transported and emplaced?
It ships dismantled on a truck and is positioned with a crane. Total weight is 3,300 kg. On site it is mounted on piles above an excavated position and can be covered with soil to reduce its signature and add overhead protection.
Does Parabella have a NATO Stock Number?
Yes: NSN 5411-61-017-2890. NATO codification means the item can be requisitioned through standard NATO supply channels using that number.
Who manufactures Parabella and who supplies it in Europe?
Parabella is manufactured in Ukraine, by a heavy metal fabricator with close to seventy years of experience and the country's first producer of steel shelter structures. In the Benelux it is supplied by MSS Defence, based in Maasdijk in the Netherlands, which handles permits, transport and documentation as a single point of contact.
